The Center for Social Value Creation hosted its Spring Undergraduate Case Competition in partnership with Gallo, challenging Smith School students to develop marketing strategies for Nobilo wine. Six teams presented recommendations to a panel of industry and faculty judges.
UMD Students Shine in National Case Competitions
University of Maryland students excelled in two national case competitions with support from the Center for Global Business. Undergraduates won first place at CGB’s Grand Global Challenges Competition and competed in Los Angeles, proposing a sustainable alternative to sand mining. Meanwhile, Smith School graduate students tackled business expansion strategies at the NASBITE International Case Competition in Cleveland.
AI in Action: Students Deliver Ethical, Practical Solutions for Local Businesses
Professors Balaji Padmanabhan and Tejwansh (Tej) Singh Anand led the Smith School’s AI in Business Case Competition, where 120+ students tackled real-world problems using AI. Multidisciplinary teams developed innovative, ethical solutions for industry clients, showcasing critical skills and creativity.
CSVC: Inaugural Inter-fraternity Pledging Case Competition a ‘Resounding Success’

Judges from SECU Credit Union evaluated financial literacy-based solutions to community issues. Nine Teams Compete in Inaugural Ace the Case Global Business Challenge
The Center for Global Business partnered with the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington, the College of Business at Florida International University, and Austral Education Group to organize and offer the first Ace the Case Global Business Challenge from February 19 through March 5, 2021.
The Case Challenge: Create a Post-Pandemic Economic Plan
It’s difficult to figure out where to start when it comes to addressing the economic fallout caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. But these Maryland Smith students have an idea. On March 6, Maryland Smith MBA students – Ashlee Albertson, Daylin Russo, Morgan Daly and Sara Bartczak – placed fourth out of 80 teams internationally in the 3rd annual Net Impact Case Competition on Social Responsibility at the University of Colorado, Boulder’s Leeds School of Business.

When it comes to determining the sustainability of an investment, these four Maryland Smith students are tough to beat.The team of undergraduate seniors – Ajay Shankar (finance and information systems), Faben Henok (OM/BA and SCM with a minor in technology entrepreneurship), Josh Chen (economics and minor in business analytics), and Alex Leipold (marketing and OM/BA) – recently won first place honors in the Milgard Invitation Case Competition on Social Responsibility, garnering the coveted first place title and a $1,000 cash prize per student.
